BALGGESVARRI (1210), STORFJORD MUNICIPALITY.

Bálggesvárri (1210) is one of several flat-topped mountains that lies on the plateau located between Skibotn/Lyngen fjord in the west and Manndalen in the east. This is a little visited mountain with no trails after passing the hill Várdovarri (439), and no cairn on the summit. I only met a few reindeer on the mountain. The only information I can find about Bálggesvárri is that Kugo was there in March 2010. The normal route would follow the gentle west ridge to the summit. To get a slightly more exciting trip, I chose to climb it via Innerskaret, a narrow valley located on the north side of the mountain. At the very bottom of the valley there is a gentle slope of about 20-25 degrees that leads up to the summit plateau. Otherwise, I would not have entered Innerskaret in the winter since the valley is V-shaped and narrow and prone to avalanches from the north side of Bálggesvárri. One should also watch out for avalanches and rockfalls in the summer.

The picture above shows Innerskaret with Bálggesvárri's north side to the right and the mesa-like, nameless peak 973 in the middle. The highest point on Bálggesvárri is hidden behind 973.

On the return trip I went down Innerskaret on the north side of point 973. Well worth a visit.
